The importnace of integrating self compassion into our exercise regime as we age

When it comes to exercise many of us blokes may be seen to treat our bodies as Fawlty treats his car when its not performing as expected or as desired. Here is a look at softening our approach to exercise.

Integrating self-compassion into an exercise regime involves adopting a kind and nurturing attitude towards oneself during physical activity. Here are some ways to incorporate self-compassion into exercise and the benefits it offers as we get older:

  1. Mindful Awareness: Practice mindful awareness during exercise by tuning into your body and focusing on the present moment. Pay attention to sensations, breathing, and overall well-being. This helps cultivate self-compassion by honoring your body's needs, limitations, and strengths without judgment or self-criticism.

  2. Adjusting Expectations: As we age, it's essential to adjust our exercise expectations and goals to align with our current abilities and physical condition. Self-compassion involves setting realistic and attainable goals, acknowledging any limitations, and avoiding self-judgment or comparison to others. Embrace exercise as a way to nurture and support your body, rather than pushing it beyond its limits.

  3. Listening to Your Body: Practice self-compassion by listening to your body's signals during exercise. Respect any discomfort, pain, or fatigue, and make modifications or take breaks as needed. Trust your body's wisdom and give yourself permission to rest or modify exercises without feeling guilty or self-critical.

  4. Celebrating Progress: Instead of focusing solely on performance or achieving specific outcomes, practice self-compassion by celebrating your progress and efforts. Recognize and appreciate the steps you take towards maintaining an active lifestyle, regardless of the intensity or duration of your workouts. Acknowledge and celebrate your commitment to self-care and overall well-being.

  5. Embracing Variety and Enjoyment: Engage in exercises and activities that you genuinely enjoy and that bring you pleasure. Self-compassion involves finding joy in movement and allowing yourself to explore various forms of exercise that suit your preferences and abilities. Embrace variety and flexibility in your routine to make it more enjoyable and sustainable.

Benefits of incorporating self-compassion into your exercise regime as you get older:

  1. Reduced Risk of Injury: By practicing self-compassion, you are more likely to listen to your body's signals and avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits, reducing the risk of exercise-related injuries.

  2. Enhanced Motivation and Adherence: Self-compassion fosters a positive mindset, which can increase motivation and adherence to exercise. Rather than feeling discouraged by setbacks or self-criticism, self-compassion helps you approach exercise with kindness, resilience, and a long-term perspective.

  3. Improved Self-Care: Self-compassion promotes self-care and self-nurturing behaviors. It encourages you to prioritize rest, recovery, and overall well-being, ensuring that your exercise routine supports your overall health and doesn't lead to burnout or excessive strain.

  4. Better Emotional Well-being: Engaging in exercise with self-compassion reduces stress, anxiety, and negative emotional experiences associated with exercise. It allows you to cultivate a more positive and nurturing relationship with your body, enhancing emotional well-being.

  5. Long-Term Sustainability: Incorporating self-compassion into your exercise regime promotes a sustainable and lifelong approach to physical activity. It encourages a balanced and adaptive mindset that adapts to your changing needs and abilities as you age, allowing you to continue reaping the benefits of exercise for years to come.

In summary, integrating self-compassion into your exercise routine as you get older involves treating your body with kindness, adjusting expectations, listening to your body's needs, and embracing enjoyment and variety. By cultivating self-compassion, you can experience improved physical and emotional well-being, reduced risk of injury, enhanced motivation, and a sustainable approach to exercise as you age.
